This page has all sorts of information about the SMG, including a description of it, how to use it in the classroom, the learning objectives, how to play, and links to current stock market quote web sites and other SMG web sites.
What is it?
THE STOCK MARKET GAME is a simulation game for the United States Stock Market developed to promote a better understanding of the Financial Investment System and how it works. Aimed at upper elementary, junior high school, high school and college students, this simulation should help students understand:
- How to trade in the stock market
- The costs and benefits involved in economic decision-making
- Buyers and market demand
- Sellers and market supply
- Sources and uses of capital
- Forms of business organizations
- How our economy is changing
How can the Stock Market Game be used in the classroom?
Some teachers may want to divide their class into teams and use the study of the economy and its impact on the stock market as an integral part of their course. Other teachers may want to form investment clubs for interested students and act as an advisor in these clubs. Participants usually play in teams of four or five.
Each teacher organizes the Game to fit the curriculum needs and lesson plans of his or her particular students.
Free workshops will be held prior to each Game. Teachers will be shown the mechanics of the STOCK MARKET GAME and how economic concepts and skills can be taught with the Game. Educational materials are provided to each team advisor at the start of the Game.
How is the Game played?
THE STOCK MARKET GAME allows students to "trade" on the New York and American Stock Exchanges using imaginary funds in competition with teams from other schools. THe Game involves a hypothetical $100,000, which is to be invested in a portfolio of common stock.
The students choose to buy or sell shares each day based on the next day's closing prices found in their newspaper. They are responsible for managing their investment over a 10-week period.
The transactions are entered on computer sheets each day and given to a teacher/sponsor who sends them to EconomicsAmerica-Nebraska at the Unviersity of Nebraska-Lincoln. Transactions are analyzed and a weekly statement is issued to each team which includes the status of their portfolio, including calculations of brokerage fees and interst charges on margin transactions.
The team in each region which has made the greatest gain on its original investment will be declared the winner. Awards will be presented at the conclusion of the spring session.
What is the educational value?
THE STOCK MARKET GAME fits into many different disciplines and teaching situations. It can be used in social studies, mathematics, business education, gifted education or as an extra-curricular activity. The Game can be played as an integral part of the curriculum or used as an enrichment outside the classroom.
THE STOCK MARKET GAME is designed to foster an awareness of the world of business and finance. It shows the interlocking relationships that exist at various segments of society - labor, management, technology, government, transportation, raw materials, etc. The Game sharpens study skills by placing students in decision-making roles which require research, judgment, analysis, mathematical ability and interpersonal cooperation.
