Creating an ongoing partnership to improve financial literacy for students

Banks in the Schools. Early in 2001, the UNO Center for Economic Education, OPS Conestoga Magnet School, and Well Fargo Bank began meeting to create a real world experience for students that supported the school's theme of economics and financial literacy and its' saving curriculum. The outcome of these meeting was the first elementary in-school savings bank in recent Nebraska history. Since that year, The UNO Center has worked with numerous in-school savings only banks in different school districts. With local bank partners, schools have helped many successful student savers.

The UNO Center conducts teacher workshops for faculty featuring developmentally appropriate lessons about saving that the staff then uses in the classrooms k-5. All students get some personal finance instruction even if they are not able to bring deposits. Students acting as tellers have to apply for the job and go through a regular interview process and training program with the partner bank. "Having a real world experience is invaluable for both student tellers and student depositors and makes the lessons from the classroom teacher come alive for students." said Center Co-Director, Mary Lynn Reiser.

Below is a chart of all of our Bank in the Schools programs. If you have a question or desire to learn more about this process, please contact the UNO Center for Economic Education at 554-2357 for more information.

New Treynor "Cardinal Branch" The UNO Center for Economic Education joined Treynor Elementary School and Treynor State Bank in Iowa to establish the Cardinal Branch of the bank for students in September. This partnership, where student tellers, take savings only deposits under the direction of mentors from the bank marks the 10th partnership that the UNO Center has helped establish since 2002. The branch is open one morning a week and students can bring in deposits to the student tellers and save for future goals when they leave the school. Treynor's effort is part of a special financial education program funded by Treynor State Bank for the entire K-12 Treynor district. The UNO Center is working with the Treynor economic specialist to develop a comprehensive plan for supporting economic and financial literacy for the district.

In addition to the Treynor Bank, two other school/bank partnership with the UNO Center have opened banks this fall, Fontenelle School with First National Bank and First State Bank of Fremont at Archbishop Bergen Elementary. This is the second school for First State Bank of Fremont. Future Iowa school bank plans including a new school bank with Bloomer School in Council Bluffs with US Bank in January, 2011.

The UNO Center began this outreach program in 2002 with Conestoga Economics Magnet School which this year changed its partnership to Centris Federal Credit Union, another first for the Center/school partnerships. Other school banks working with the UNO Center include: Spring Lake/Security National, Underwood Focus School/First National, Skinner Magnet Center/US Bank, RM Marrs Magnet Center and South High School/Wells Fargo. Linden School/First State Bank of Fremont.
