Summer Economics, 2009

The UNO Center for Economic Education will offer a series of summer seminars featuring several different economics teaching topics. Download this registration form, mail with a deposit check to register for these seminars.

Guffey Scholarship Application for Summer Programs

Workshops will feature:

  • Free curriculum materials on the featured topic
  • Topics that can be integrated in many subject areas for both elementary and secondary classes
  • Stipends for teachers attending
  • Demonstration of hands-on materials
  • Unique location and tours
  • Speakers on the topic featured

Stipends
In addition to the curriculum guides, a limited number of stipends will be available on a first come, first served basis. Stipends will be awarded after the teacher has attended the seminar. Guffey Teacher Stipends are provided through a grant from the Nebraska Council on Economic Education. Curriculum Guides are provided by grant through the Council for Economic Education. The limited number of stipends for each seminar will be distributed by order of date of receipt of registration form. Teachers should download special application form above and return.

June 3-5, 2009 9:00-11:30 AM; Teaching Economic and Children's Literature

Site: UNO Criss Library Audience K-6

This seminar will explore the many ways of integrating children's literature books with the economic concepts they are introducing through language arts in their classrooms. Workshop activities will include a review of elementary economic concepts and teaching strategies, and connect them with quality children's literature. The class will meet at UNO's Criss Library to look at online resources available as well as the Federal Reserve Bank. The children's book expert from the local Bookworm will be part of the discussion about the business of creating children's literature. Teachers participating in the seminar will be eligible to receive a Guffey Stipend as well as free curriculum materials featuring children's literature. Space is limited. June 12, 2009 9:00 AM-3:30 PM, America's Economic Crisis: Causes, Comparisons, Consequences and Curriculum

Site: Union Pacific Headquarters

Audience: Middle and HS Business and Social Studies Teachers

This seminar for middle and high school business and social studies teachers sponsored by the UNO Center for Economic Education, with support from Blue Cross Blue Shield and the Nebraska Council on Economic Education, will feature speakers, panelists and instructional materials selected to help teachers to improve the teaching about our current economic situation. Speakers from the UNO Departments of Economics and Public Administration and panelists from area businesses and the Federal Reserve Bank, plus demonstrations of curriculum materials by the UNO Center staff will be included in the day-long program. June 15-18, 12:30-3:30 PM. Money and Banking for K-8 Teachers, with an optional day trip June 19

Sites: Durham Western Heritage Museum and Federal Reserve Bank /Omaha Branch.
Audience K-8 teachers

This seminar will feature a review of economics concepts, materials, and teaching strategies dealing with money, credit, banking, borrowing, lending and other elementary personal finance topics. Participants will hear from educators from the Federal Reserve Bank, participate in lesson demonstrations and review a variety of materials and resources for teaching about money and banking. The workshop will meet at the Durham Western Heritage Museum's "Moneyville" exhibition, as well as the Federal Reserve Bank. On Friday, June 19, teachers who wish will carpool to Kansas City to visit the new Federal Reserve Bank as well as the World War I Liberty Museum next door to the bank. Teachers participating in the seminar will be eligible to receive a Guffey Stipend as well as free curriculum materials relating to personal finance topics. Space is limited.
