Congratulations to Mary Lynn Reiser, Center Associate Director, who was awarded the statewide Nebraska Career Development Award for 2009!
Mary Lynn received the 2009 Distinguished Partner Award at the NCE Conference June 10-11 in Kearney. The conference annually recognizes outstanding Nebraska career education programs, partners and staff.
The Omaha Public Schools (OPS) Career Center nominated Reiser for her advocacy of the district’s Career Center programs. She also has served as chair of the Academy of Finance Advisory Board for the past two years. The Academy of Finance program, offered in five OPS high schools, prepares students for careers in a variety of financial service areas by working with local financial partners and using a nationally developed curriculum.
The award nomination also states that Reiser has been instrumental in revising and implementing courses within the district’s Academy of Finance, as well as helping the district develop a required economics course for students.

UNO Center for Economic Education receives the 2004 Albert Beekhuis Award
The UNO Center for Economic Education has been singled out from among 240 centers of its kind across the nation to receive the 2004 Albert Beekhuis Award. The honor recognizes outstanding performance in helping teachers teach economic education. More information on this award is available: UNO Center receives Beekhuis Award
Conestoga Econ and Math Magnet Elementary Wins Prestigious National Leavey Award!
In spring, 2004, Conestoga (Omaha Public Schools econ and math elementary magnet school) was recognized nationally as a model elementary economics program by being named a recipient of the Leavey Freedom Foundation Award. The award demonstrates the successful ongoing partnership between UNO Center and Conestoga staff to create and maintain the specialized economics curriculum for all k-6 students. Sustained professional development for the staff is made possible by ongoing Center support and willingness of school staff to participate. The Conestogy staff goes above and beyond regular assignments to develop and improve the program over time.
Students experience learning about and using economics and mathematics throughout grade school through whole class curriculum and special events and activities at each grade.
This elementary economics program was created from scratch using the best economics materials available and the commitment of the school's principal and faculty. The program is constantly being refined and is now being recognized nationally by others in the field as a model for elementary schools. It's not about having a bank or store in the school (which Conestoga does), it's about teaching basic economics concepts at all grade levels and infusing and demonstrating these concepts in all curriculum areas the students study. It takes a highly motivated staff and administration to sustain this type of program over time.
